Press Release

17/02/25

Advocacy for justice for the Oromo people is deeply saddened and outraged to understand and report that the 10 years old Simboo Birhaanu was raped and killed by an Ethiopian military forces in central Oromia, Metta Walqixxe district, in Eelaa town on 29th , January 2025. These grave human rights violations are not only appalling but also constitute crimes against humanity under international law. This rape and killing of Simboo Birhanu a pervasive, is incident but unique in nature, yet another example and part of an ongoing pattern of killing, torturing and oppression of innocent Oromo’s across the country all day by covering up the media from international community.

AJOP/THSO seriously concerned about mass detention, torture and killing of civilians indiscriminately. by the Ethiopian government forces . Children, women and the elderly have been systematically targeted, suffering unspeakable brutality at the hands of those entrusted with protecting them. Such acts of violence against the most vulnerable members of our society are unacceptable and must not go unpunished. These heinous acts violate international treaties such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Geneva Conventions. Thus, we demand:

  1. An independent and transparent investigation into these crimes.
  2. The immediate prosecution of those preparators
  3. Increased international pressure on the government to uphold human rights and prevent further atrocities.

The international community including the Western and African countries must not remain silent in the face of such grave human rights violations and put pressure on Ethiopian government to stop inhumane acts.
